Home Remodeling in Newtown Square, PA
Remodeling for the farmhouses, the postwar streets and the newer communities of Newtown Square.
Newtown Township was settled in 1681 by Welsh Quakers and stayed a farming community for about 250 years. The railroad passed it by, and the population actually fell, from 830 in 1860 to 648 in 1890; a trolley arrived in 1895 and country estates followed. The square is where Routes 3 and 252 cross, and the Square Tavern of 1742 still stands there, one of four National Register listings in the township along with the eight-sided Hood Octagonal School of 1842, Bartram's Covered Bridge of 1860 and the Paper Mill House. After World War II, Newtown Square grew from fewer than 2,000 people into a suburb. The newest chapter is Liseter, built from 2013 on part of Liseter Hall Farm, the 600-acre estate at Route 252 and Goshen Road that began as a 1919 wedding gift, with carriage homes and single houses under a community association.
The 19073 ZIP code also takes in parts of Edgmont, Marple and Radnor townships and of Willistown in Chester County, and each has a permit office of its own. Dawson's serves the whole Newtown Square area, about an hour from Middletown.
A township that inspects with its own staff
Newtown Township enforces the state construction code directly rather than through a third-party agency, using the Department of Building, Planning and Code Enforcement, a name it took in 2011. That department reviews plans, issues permits, does the inspections and performs a use and occupancy inspection whenever a property changes owners.
The historic resources map
The township's historic preservation ordinance, last revised in April 2021, has a Historical Commission keep a Historic Resources Map. Class I resources are on the National Register or have been found eligible for it; Class II resources are buildings the commission judges significant to the township's history or architecture. On either class, permitted work that changes an exterior feature visible from the road, or ties a new structure to the old one, goes before the commission and the Board of Supervisors and has to meet the federal preservation standards. Ordinary maintenance and paint colors are exempt. An addition to a mapped farmhouse is therefore designed to be compatible in scale and plainly newer than the original.
Postwar singles and the newer communities
Most township houses are Cape Cods, ranches and colonials from the late 1940s onward, ready for a kitchen opened toward the family room, baths rebuilt from the studs and a basement finished. In a newer community like Liseter the houses are young, so the projects are finishing the lower level, adding a deck or reworking a kitchen to the owner's taste, with the association signing off on anything outside.
Dawson's serves Newtown Square for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, additions, windows, siding, decks and carpentry.
Nearby, Dawson's also serves Broomall, Media, Swarthmore and Wallingford.
Newtown Square is part of the Delaware County, PA service area.
