Home Remodeling in Glasgow, DE

Kitchen, bath, basement and exterior work for the neighborhoods around Glasgow, Delaware.

Glasgow grew up at a crossroads that has mattered since the Welsh Tract was granted in 1701 and a Presbyterian church followed. Today the crossroads is Route 40 and Route 896, with Peoples Plaza on one corner and Glasgow Park on another: 300 acres of former farmland the county turned into a regional park in 2004, with a paved loop, the Bear-Glasgow YMCA and a skate park added in 2012. The neighborhoods around it came in two waves. Four Seasons and Salem Woods are mostly houses from 1970 to 1999, and the communities toward the Maryland line and along Route 896 toward Newark added houses through the 2000s.

That gives Glasgow a slightly older housing stock than Bear next door, and a different set of projects. A 1978 colonial or bi-level here is on its second kitchen and its first serious bathroom rebuild, while the 2005 houses are just starting. Dawson's serves Glasgow for all of it, from the older streets near the park to the newest cul-de-sacs.

Bi-levels, colonials and their kitchens

The bi-level is common in Glasgow's 1970s neighborhoods: a split entry, bedrooms and the kitchen upstairs, a family room and garage below. The kitchen upstairs is small and boxed in, and the most useful change is to open it to the living and dining space so the upper floor works as one room. On a colonial from the same era the move is the same wall between kitchen and family room. Lower levels in bi-levels are half above grade with full windows, which makes them the easiest rooms in town to finish into real living space.

Permits and the county

Glasgow is unincorporated, so building permits go through the Licensing Division of New Castle County's Department of Land Use. Most neighborhoods built since the 1980s have covenants and a homeowners association that reviews exterior changes such as additions, decks and siding color, while the 1970s neighborhoods more often have a civic association without that authority. Which one applies to your street decides whether an exterior project needs one approval or two.

Siding and windows on the 1970s houses

A house built in Glasgow in 1978 has likely had one round of replacement windows and may still carry its original siding. Second-generation replacements are better made: double-hung and casement units with insulated glass sized to the openings, and vinyl or fiber cement siding installed over house wrap the original builder skipped. The bi-level's large front windows and the colonial's rows of double-hungs are the places the difference shows first.
